Summer Car Maintenance

Staying ahead of summer temperatures with your car care maintenance can dodge unwelcome surprises while on the road. Here's a quick rundown of car care tips to prepare your vehicle for a safe and worry-free summer.

Change your oil and oil filter

A great place to start for Summer car care is the lube that keeps your engine parts running properly. If you can't recall the last time you got your oil changed, it's time to bring your vehicle in for clean oil and a new oil filter. A dirty filter can be causing your car to not run smoothly because of too much built-up debris. Even if you are routine on getting your oil changed, high temperatures require more work for some of your car parts to run so getting the oil changed at the first sign of Summer can help your car engine operate better and for longer periods.

Check vehicle fluids

You may be surprised at the number of different types of fluids in your vehicle, all used for a particular reason to keep your car going. There are fluids for your transmission, power steering, windshield wipers, and coolant in your vehicle. Get them checked as the summer rolls around to defeat the chance of breaking down and being stuck in 100+ degree temperatures. Having the proper amount of coolant fluid is especially important so that your car doesn't overheat.

Check car tire pressure

Most cars have a gauge saying whether or not your tire pressure is low. Low tire pressure causes your vehicle to have to work harder to propel the car forward. Make sure tires (and spare tires) are properly inflated to save you from unwanted surprises when out on the road.

Test the battery

The main reason why car batteries fail or have a shorter battery life is heat. Summer temperatures cause fluid loss within the vehicle, which can mean a dead car battery at the most inopportune moments. A simple precaution is testing out your battery before a potentially dangerous situation arises. Many auto shops offer free battery testing to tell you when your battery may fail and ensure you have a better idea of your car's battery life. Take advantage of this free service as soon as you can!

Inspect the brakes

Properly functioning brakes are as important as being able to see out of the windshield when driving; without them, you're going to be in a world of trouble. Car brakes usually show signs of wear. Whether it be making squeaking or grinding noises or pushing harder to stop, getting your brakes inspected before the summer season kicking in will help you have behind-the-wheel peace of mind.

Fix the alignment

Do you feel your steering wheel pulling to the right or left when you're driving? Or even if it vibrates or seems to get off track when driving straight, you likely need to get your alignment fixed. Fun fact: proper alignment extends the life of tires and makes for an easier and smoother ride. Some auto shops will inspect your alignment for free. Don't be afraid to call and ask ahead of time.

Summer heat puts a lot of decisions on you to ensure your car's health and keep you and your passengers away from harm when on the road. Following some simple routine car care tips will help you stick to Summer fun and not standing on the side of the road in the sweltering sun with a wrecked vehicle.
